Google Takes Deals Country-Wide: Will You Check In?

first_imgWhy IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Just in time for last month’s SXSW conference in Austin, Google rolled out check-in deals at 60 venues throughout Texas’s capital city. All users had to do was check-in to a location using Google Latitude, Google’s location-based check-in app, and they were rewarded with discounts and deals. Today, Google announced that it would be bringing those deals to thousands of venues throughout the country. The whole thing is pretty straightforward, but has an air of Johnny-come-lately to it. All you need to do is to check-in to a location using Google Latitude and you can get a discount or a deal. The more you check in, the more “status” you gain and the deals get sweeter. Rather than only allowing for one “mayor”, as on Foursquare, this allows businesses to reward customers for loyalty, which is pretty cool for customers. Finally, the one employee with a smartphone and a Foursquare addiction isn’t the only one to get that sweet, sweet deal. Instead, there are three levels of “status” for which businesses can offer different deals. As with any social effort by Google, however, we have one question to ask – why? When the company unveiled its +1 initiative last week, we had the same questions. Facebook made a push with its own deals initiative today, but we have none of the same questions for them, because checking in has an inherently social aspect to it with Facebook. Users can show off to their friends or make their whereabouts known to increase the chance of a serendipitous encounter. With Google, it still feels like a vote cast into a black hole. “Here I am!” you shout, but nobody, except that business, is listening. Tags:#Google#Location#mobile#web It’s funny because, before deals and coupons and everything of the sort became all the rage, we argued that using location-based services just to share with friends seemed a bit pointless. But now that we’re offered the exact opposite – a check-in app that offers little to nothing in the way of social interaction, but plenty in the way of incentive – we see the opposite argument. Why would I want to check-in, just do see if I could get a discount? Especially when there are other apps out there that offer both?Google Latitude (with all its gooey deal goodness) is available for both Android and iPhone. Maybe an unsocial way to check-in and get deals is exactly what you wanted. Or maybe you actually have enough friends using Google to consider it social but I, for one, have all of my friends on Facebook and Twitter. His achievement, however, became an afterthought following San Miguel’s 110-97 loss to TNT, 110-97, in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.ADVERTISEMENT The former Ateneo star, though, would rather want his team win than him gaining a personal achievement in a loss.“I hate to repeat myself but I’d rather get the win and score zero,” said Pessumal, who broke the previous mark set by Mike Tolomia, who went 6-of-6, on Sept. 15, 2017. “Sometimes I just come to the game and have the mindset to play the right way, and if I’m open I’ll shoot it.”FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesSPORTSSingapore latest to raise issue on SEA Games food, logistics“Actually, I didn’t even know that I didn’t miss. Boxing: Murat Gassiev vs Oleksandr Uysk involved “Tough Negotiations” for WBSS Final

first_imgAdvertisementThe World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Tournament has been a treat for the fans to watch. There were rumblings throughout the week that Oleksandr Usyk was refusing to fight in Russia and that the final match was in jeopardy of not happening at all.Well, today Usyk has come out and stated, that he no longer objects to have the bout in Russia. The contest is being negotiated for July 21st in Moscow. A press conference can come as early as Monday where it is expected that the date and venue will be announced. It’s been a great tournament as the winner will become the undisputed champion of the cruiserweight division. The fact all the major sanctioning bodies will have all the belts on the line is a sure sign, that the tournament got it right. It truly pinned the best in the division against one another. The finalist Oleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev should bring a very appealing matchup. These two men are clearly the best in the division.Gassiev made it to the finals by defeating Yunier Dorticos by twelfth round TKO. It was a bout that showcased his talent and showed the world just how good he is. He will have the treat to fight in front of his home crowd, where he has a huge following.Usyk, on the other hand, traveled to Latvia, where he defeated Mairis Briedis by majority decision. It was a good bout that left Usyk a little upset as he felt he won unanimously. Which is probably why he was so hesitant fighting Gassiev in Russia originally. Both men are undefeated, highly skilled, with a very good in-ring IQ. It’s truly a very underrated matchup just like the division they fight in. Now, that we finally have confirmation that the bout will indeed take place, the real winners in this are going to be the fans.Advertisementlast_img read more

The points table is at a nascent stage with Sunrisers on six points from five games sitting at the third position while Daredevils is lying fourth with four points.Brief Preview: Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to continue their three-match winning run at home when they face a spirited Delhi Daredevils in an Indian Premier League contest at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. All of Hyderabad’s three wins have come here and they won their last match on Tuesday, defeating Kings XI Punjab by five runs. They have lost both their away matches played so far, which suggests that they really thrive at home. However, their might will come under serious challenge against Delhi, who defeated Punjab by more than 50 runs before losing to Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets in a match decided in the last over.Packed with young batsmen like Sam Billings, Sanju Samson, Karun Nair and Shreyas Iyer, the Zaheer Khan-led Delhi’s strength lies in their array of talented seam-bowling all-rounders. The likes of Chris Morris, Corey Anderson, Angelo Mathews and Pat Cummins provide the depth and balance to the side. But the exciting team sometimes faces an absence of a pivot around which the team will bat around. (Read Full Preview)last_img read more

Morocco example to follow in terms of achieving MDGs UN official

Nairobi – Morocco is an example to follow in terms of achieving the Millennium Development Goals, particularly those related to housing, said UN deputy secretary-general and executive director of UN-Habitat, Joan Clos at a meeting of Group of 77 and China, held Friday at the UN headquarters in Nairobi. The choice of the capital Rabat to host, in November 2012, a UN-Habitat international conference is not fortuitous, Clos said in an interview with MAP, noting that this choice reflects the international recognition for the commendable efforts that Morocco continues to make in the fight against unhealthy housing and to provide the conditions for sustainable development. The Rabat Conference culminated in the adoption by the Council of UN-Habitat of a Moroccan draft resolution entitled “making slums history, a global challenge.” This draft resolution is based on the Rabat Declaration, adopted at the International Conference “Making Slums History A Global Challenge for 2020.”The UN official recalled giving the Honor Award for Habitat to Morocco in October 2010 as a way to honor the Kingdom for its efforts and political will under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. read more

Witnesses said the singer and songwriter, a Houston native who performed as Tay Watts, may have hit his head when he fell off the pier around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. He apparently never resurfaced after plunging into the water.A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department lifeguard immediately jumped into the ocean from the pier, launching a search effort that went through the night Sunday into early Monday, continued throughout Monday and resumed this morning. The search and recovery efforts began at 7 this morning from an SDFD helicopter, fire department spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. Three boats equipped with side-scan sonar were also sent out to comb the waters off Mission and Pacific beaches.“We will start at the South Mission Beach jetty and scan towards the pier,” Munoz said. “Divers will be deployed when we find objects of interest.”The search began Sunday night with a lifeguard boat, helicopter, personal watercraft and at least 16 lifeguards searching from the water, Munoz said. After braving 4- to 6-foot surf for more than an hour, the lifeguards ended the initial search about 7 p.m. Sunday.Around that same time, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and the Coast Guard Cutter Haddock arrived and searched for Watts throughout Sunday night and Monday morning, Petty Officer Rob Simpson said.Lifeguards and Coast Guard personnel searched for Watts unsuccessfully all day Monday amid waves of 3 to 4 feet and a strong rip current, Munoz said. The search Monday was called off at 5:30 p.m., a little after sunset.“Lifeguards searched the areas of interest with scuba divers,” Munoz said. “We had two vessels with side-scan sonar scanning the area and dove on one object of interest. We had free divers search around the pier and in a large, longshore rip current inside the surf line.”An SDFD helicopter also made two 50-minute searches along the shoreline and just off shore Monday, Munoz said.
