Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Masood Azhar among 3 Pakistanis India believes are behind the Uri attack

first_imgThree days after the Uri terror attack, India Today has learned from sources that Jaish-e-Mohammad’s (JeM) Kashif Jaan, Rauf Asgar and Masood Azhar may have masterminded the brazen attack.Kashif Jaan, the JeM operative who had escorted the Pathankot terrorists till the border, could also have been the handler of the terrorists who carried out the attack in Uri, sources in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) told India Today. The NIA suspects that the JeM handler could have gone underground post the Uri attack. After a preliminary investigation confirms the role of the three JeM men, India will ask Pakistan to arrest these terrorists and hand them over to India. Not ready to let Pakistan slip away, India, this time, will seek the support of international agencies to force Pakistan to act against these homegrown terrorists. NIA COLLECTS EVIDENCE In another development, the Army has handed over crucial evidences and documents related to the Uri terror attack to the NIA. A team of NIA officials is also collecting evidences and samples from the attack site in Uri to zero down on the perpetrators who carried out one of the most dastardly attacks on the Indian army.ALSO READ: Uri attack: Parrikar seeks report from Army on how terrorists managed to infiltrate camp Sources said that the NIA is working on different theories and will take the help of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) to collect incriminating evidence. DNA SAMPLES WILL BE THE KEY The NIA will also collect DNA samples of the slain terrorists. It will seek the help of the Army, IB and RAW to get the identities of the terrorists verified. Sources have told India Today that once the identities are verified, the NIA will identify the relatives of the terrorists in Pakistan and confront its neighbour and ask for the samples of the relatives.  Sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that in the Pathankot terror attack case, despite repeated reminders, Pakistan did not provide the DNA samples of the Pakistan-based relatives of the slain terrorists. The MHA will discuss the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs and try to take it up with Pakistan. The MHA does not want a repeat of the Pathankot case and is keen to not allow Pakistan to sleep over the DNA sample issue in the Uri attack case.advertisementALSO READ: Uri attack: India to respond at multiple levels, but will the stand be aggressive? TERRORISTS OBSERVED THE CAMP It is being suspected that the terrorists parked themselves near the camp and observed the activities of the troop possibly for a day or two before carrying out the attack on Sunday. INTERCEPTS TO BE SOUGHT The NIA is set to seek the complete intercepts of the Army, the IB and the RAW in and around the Uri sector for the last two to four months.  LEADS ON INSIDER ROLE Sources have said that the NIA has got some leads regarding the role of insiders in the Uri terror attack which will be probed thoroughly. “The NIA has got crucial information on the role of insiders who provided shelter to the terrorists and also on those who leaked information regarding the troop movements,” sources told India Today.last_img read more

Iran Annan welcomes release of journalist Akbar Ganji

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said today he is pleased at the freeing of Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji following a six-year prison sentence.Mr. Ganji received his term in 2000 after returning from a human rights conference in Berlin where he reportedly expressed views critical of the Iranian authorities and the country’s Supreme Leader. He was charged with “harming national security” and “spreading propaganda against the regime.” In August 2005, the Secretary-General appealed to the Iranian authorities to grant Mr. Ganji’s release on humanitarian grounds following a prolonged hunger strike, spokesman Stephane Dujarric recalled today.Following Mr. Ganji’s arrest in 2000, various mechanisms of the Commission on Human Rights had repeatedly appealed to the Iranian authorities to review his situation, as well as the situation of other intellectuals and journalists imprisoned for press and opinion-related offences. In a separate development, Asma Jahangir, an expert with the Commission, today drew attention to a letter in which the Supreme Leader of Iran asked governmental agencies to identify persons who adhere to the Bahá’í faith and collect information on them. Ms. Janhangir, the UN Special Rapporteur on religious freedom, expressed concern that the information gained as a result of such monitoring will be used as a basis for the increased persecution of, and discrimination against, members of the Bahá’í faith, in violation of international standards.“Such monitoring constitutes an impermissible and unacceptable interference with the rights of members of religious minorities,” she said in a statement released today. The Bahá’í community has an estimated 300,000 to 350,000 adherents throughout Iran but is not recognized as a religious minority in the country Ms. Janhangir, who is unpaid and serves in an independent capacity, called on the Government of Iran to refrain from categorizing individuals according to their religion and to “ensure that members of all religious minorities are free to hold and practise their religious beliefs, without discrimination or fear.” read more

DR Congo Ebola response returns to full speed despite risky environment

Civil unrest in Beni, the epicenter of the epidemic, crippled operations last month. But WHO says that now, under Government leadership and in collaboration with partner agencies, the Ebola response has resumed in force. However, it warned, further disruptions and security issues, could seriously impact the complex effort to end the outbreak. The main challenges to the response are a hazardous security situation and the inability to prevent and control infection in many public and private health facilities.,WHO revealed that some 577 confirmed cases and 377 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak was declared in August last year. The UN agency also stated that 220 people have recovered and more than 56,500 have been vaccinated. From 31 December 2018 to 2 January 2019, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus traveled to Ebola-affected areas in the DRC, where he spelled out that “Ebola responders are sacrificing a lot… to combat one of the world’s deadliest viruses in a risky environment.”Accompanying him, Dr, Jeremy Farrar, Chair of WHO’s Research and Development Blueprint, came away “worried by the immense challenges they face in such a complex environment.”,At a glance: DRC’s continuing battle against Ebola: WHO currently has 447 staff in DRC to support the response. Some 37,000 contacts have been registered for tracing, with almost 5,000 under surveillance.Six Ebola Treatment Centers are caring for 143 inpatients – 30 confirmed cases. To date, 248 patients have been treated under the MEURI protocol, an ethical framework developed by WHO, in consultation with experts and the DRC.  As of Sunday, 44 patients were enrolled in a randomized control trial in Beni.Over 24,000,000 travelers have been screened, with two confirmed cases detected among them.,“It is vital the international community recognizes this and ensures the DRC and WHO have the support needed to ensure this outbreak does not spiral out of control,” he said. The Ebola outbreak is in reality, several distinct outbreaks in the different affected areas. While the major outbreak in Beni, which was responsible for a large proportion of cases in recent months, is coming under control, the positive trend there is not mirrored elsewhere.WHO pointed out that the volatile situation in Komanda and Butembo/Katwa has rendered those outbreaks more unstable. read more

Cartoon Characters Take Over Facebook Profile Pics

first_imgWhy all the nostalgia in your Facebook feed this morning? Why it’s all a part of the “Change your profile picture to a cartoon character campaign,” of course. It’s the latest meme sweeping across the social network, but this one is–at least in theory–for a good cause. Here’s the mission statement of the campaign,Change your profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood andinvite [sic] your friends to do the same. Until Monday (Dec 6) there shouldbe [sic] no human faces on facebook, but an invasion of memories. This is acampaign [sic] to stop violence against children. The “campaign” has gained steam fairly quickly, with the main page nabbing a little over 9,000 followers in a number of days–there are any number of copycat pages to be found, as well, by searching for the above phrase. How the group actually plans on ending violence against children is beyond us, but at least the idea is nice…A quick survey of trending topics on Google is an interesting study in demographics, with “cartoons from the 90s,” “80s cartoons,” and “1990 cartoons” all trending. “Bobby’s World,” “Ahhh Real Monsters,” “Little Bear,” “Doug,” “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “Angry Beavers,” Strawberry Shortcake,” and “Recess” are all having surprisingly good days on Google, as well.last_img read more

Upcoming USB SuperSpeed 30 will let you ditch the power adapter

first_imgUSB 3.0 and Thunderbolt are both a big improvement over last-generation external hook-ups. But there’s always room for improvement, and Intel’s announced some big changes for the new specs. The biggest: total maximum power output. It’s going to increase from just 10 watts up to a mind-blowing 100 watts. What would a single USB SuperSpeed 3.0 hub with 100 watt output allow you to do? On a desktop setup, it’d provide enough juice for you to power a printer and a pair of LCD displays — all without having to give up another outlet on your power bar or make room to squeeze in yet another brick. If you pick up a laptop equipped with the new SuperSpeed, you’ll be able to charge your smartphone or tablet in a flash. Intel’s new spec will be able to push as much as 20 volts and 5 amps to an attached device. There are additional benefits apart from helping geeks everywhere solve their cord clutter nightmares, of course. Environmental advocates are hopeful that the new USB spec will help cut down on gadget waste in landfills much as the switch to micro USB on smartphones and tablets has done.More power is great, but more speed would be nice, too. Intel’s delivering on that front, doubling the upper limit on both USB 3.0 SuperSpeed and Thunderbolt. Next-generation hardware will be able to push data at a rate of 10Gbps on USB and 20Gbps on Thunderbolt. The update should help manufacturers delivers some much more compelling  devices. Perhaps we’ll finally see some truly interesting external video cards — early attempts weren’t exactly awesome performers.last_img read more

Le 9 juillet 2011 à 14:59 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Le 9 mars 2012 à 14:13 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Black box recorder recovered from wreckage of train crash

first_imgHOBOKEN, N.J. — Federal investigators pulled one of the black box recorders from the wrecked commuter train at the Hoboken station and struggled to extract the second one Friday as they tried to figure out what caused the crash that killed one person and injured more than 100 others. The two event recorders could contain information on speed, braking and other conditions that can help investigators determine whether the tragedy resulted from an equipment malfunction or a distracted or incapacitated engineer.Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board will be looking to determine how fast the train was going when it crashed at the busy station Thursday morning. They hope to speak to the train’s injured engineer on Friday, NTSB Vice Chairman T. Bella Dinh-Zarr said. State officials say he has been cooperating. The investigation will seek to answer many questions, including whether a system designed to prevent accidents by overriding the engineer and automatically slowing or stopping trains that are going too fast could have helped if it had been installed on the line.Investigators recovered an event recorder from the locomotive Thursday night and will be examining it Friday, Dinh-Zarr said Friday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The device contains information on the train’s speed and braking.last_img read more

J Coles New Album KOD Arrives Along With Three Title Explanations

first_img Twitter What Does ‘KOD’ Mean To J. Cole? j-coles-new-album-kod-arrives-along-three-title-explanations The first interpretation of the title, according to a video on Twitter, is “Kids On Drugs.” A detuned voice in the video, presumably Cole’s, explains, “If I turn on the TV right now, it’s not gonna take long for there to be an advertisement that pops up that says, ‘Are you feeling down? Have you been having lonely thoughts?’ And then they shove a pill in your face. The first response of any problems is medicate.”The second meaning follows: “King Overdose.” The voice returns, “That’s representing me, the times that I was, and am, afflicted by the same methods of escape, whether it be alcohol, phone addiction, women.”It should be noted that the album’s cover contains a written message at the top that reads, “This album is in no way intended to glorify addiction.” The third meaning? “Kill Our Demons.””That’s the end goal, to face our s***, realize that we have some s*** going on inside. Everybody … because nobody’s f***ing perfect,” the voice says, “We’ve got to be honest with ourselves. Look in the mirror or look inside and ask ourselves questions like, ‘What’s causing me to run to this thing as an escape?’ And once I find the root of that, let me look it in its face and see what it really is.”The release of KOD came with short notice, as Cole began teasing the project just earlier this week. On April 16 he put on a surprise open-invite listening party at the Gramercy Theatre in New York City, and on April 18 he revealed the album artwork and track listing. KOD is the follow-up to Cole’s 2016 album, 4 Your Eyez Only, which was his fourth consecutive No. 1 album.
