Source = e-Travel Blackboard: G.A Comments made by Air Asia Group chief executive Tony Fernandes during an interview last week have landed the founder of Asia’s biggest budget carrier in the middle of a racial controversy.Among other issues Mr Fernandes had about the necessity, sense and viability of the creation of potential rival Thai Tiger Airways (TTA), he raised doubts of non-Asian business people successfully running Asia-based businesses.“We’re Asians, not a bunch of white guys running the airline,” he told the Bangkok Post, pointing out that the Thai-run AirAsia had local and Asian market knowledge.According to the Thai newspaper, Mr Fernandes was referring to “some Tiger Airways management”.Tiger Airways said they were “disappointed and surprised” at the “racial slurs”, calling the comments “unbecoming and unnecessary”.“Tiger Airways is proud of our employees’ contributions regardless of their race or cultural background,” they said in a statement.Mr Fernandes has reportedly stood by his comments, telling The Straits Times that his remarks were not to be taken as a general statement of all Westerners running Asia-based businesses.“I gave my honest opinion. I was just talking about the Westerners in Tiger Airways’ management who do not know Asia very well,” he said, adding that Air Asia and subsidiary AirAsia X had many Westerners in their ranks. In his interview with the Bangkok Times, Mr Fernandes joined with others in the industry criticising the proposed TTA, saying THAI should not add another low cost carrier to its future, but should instead concentrate on its core strength: premium airline business. He added that an alliance with Tiger Airways was “odd” because it was not making much money and its pilot shortages are affecting operations.“[Tiger Airways] have not yet been able to solve their problems, so what are they going to teach the THAI?” Mr Fernandes asked.
